5 Classic Games That Remind Us Why We Miss Sports

It has been a brutal month-plus of no sports. You don’t need me to tell you that. But perhaps I can help by reminding you of the good times: those classic, timeless games that represent everything good about sports.

Here are, in order of importance, the five most important, most exciting games in history—each one, a perfect illustration of why we watch in the first place.

5. Jan. 6, 2020: The Winnipeg Jets beat the Montreal Canadiens 3-2

The Jets took the real “Battle of Canada,” jumping out to a 2-0 lead on the Habs and making it stand up. Nikolaj Ehlers scored a shorthanded goal and added an assist, for what would be the first of a two-game win streak for Winnipeg. A thrilling game that reminds us why we miss sports.

4. Dec. 27, 2019: The St. Louis Blues beat the Winnipeg Jets 5-4 (OT)

The defending champion Blues stretched their winning streak to seven with this thriller in Winnipeg. The teams traded goals, with neither Jordan Binnington nor Connor Hellebuyck looking sharp in net, until David Perron ended things in overtime with a goal off a sloppy Jets giveaway. A thrilling game that reminds us why we miss sports.

3. Jan. 22, 2020: The Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Winnipeg Jets 4-3

Recency bias? Hardly. Though it happened just last week, this was undoubtedly one of the biggest sports stories of the year. Oliver Bjorkstrand scored a pair for Columbus, and rookie goalie Elvis Merzlikins, who has seized the starting job with Joonas Korpisalo out injured, racked up 27 saves. A thrilling game that reminds us why we miss sports.

2. Dec. 10, 2019: The Winnipeg Jets beat the Detroit Red Wings 5-1

In this first of a home-and-home, the Jets started slowly but erupted for three goals in two minutes late in the second, from Blake Wheeler, Andrew Copp, and Patrik Laine. A thrilling game that reminds us why we miss sports.
